For starters, the display on the front is a 6.39-inch 2K HDR 10 compliant panel with a notch and while that seems normal by 2018 standards, the sides of the display are curved and bleed along the edges to taper onto the sides seamlessly, pretty much like Samsung’s ‘S’ or ‘Note’ series flagships. The back is also made of glass with the aurora lights pattern, something that Huawei has mastered over time. The build also qualifies to be IP68 water and dust resistant. Oh yeah, there’s also a fingerprint scanner under the display. The phone weighs in at 189g which might seem heavy at first glance, but hold on, the battery is a whopping 4200mAh unit which is massive by flagship standards and when coupled with the power efficient Kirin 980 SoC should result in crazy battery life. Talking about that SoC, the Kirin 980 is based on the 7nm manufacturing process and is the only current chipset other than the A12 Bionic from Apple to be based on that architecture. The Mate 20 Pro is also one of the first few phones to be running Android 9 Pie out of the box with Huawei’s EMUI skin on top. There’s 6GB of RAM along with 128GB of internal storage. The major highlight of the Mate 20 Pro is its cameras. We saw the Huawei P20 Pro outperform every single smartphone camera earlier this year and Huawei has further worked upon it to produce probably the best cameras on a smartphone yet again. There are three cameras on the rear, a 40MP primary camera with an f/1.8 aperture, a 20MP wide-angle lens with an f/2.2 aperture and finally an 8MP f/2.4 lens with an insane 5x optical zoom capability. The front-facing camera is no slouch either and is a 24MP f/2.0 shooter. The front also houses dedicated sensors for face unlock. The huge 4200mAh battery means the requirement for extremely fast charging and that is indeed true with the Mate 20 Pro. The bundled charger is a 40W adapter and Huawei claims that it will top up the device to 70% in under 30 minutes. That’s not it. The phone also supports 15W wireless charging which is a first for a smartphone. Something that’s also never been done, is the Mate 20 Pro can reverse wireless charge, meaning your smartphone can act as a wireless charging pad for other smartphones. Pretty cool ain’t it?
